Chillborn | Free D&D 5e Monster

A blizzard rolls across the tundra. Visibility drops. The wind howls. Your players are cold, tired, and desperately looking for shelter.
Then something strange happens.
They feel warm.
Safe, even.
And that should probably worry them.
The Chillborn is a small elemental predator designed for arctic environments, snowy wilderness encounters, and low-level adventures where you want the weather itself to feel dangerous. It is fast, difficult to spot, and capable of incapacitating travelers by surrounding them with an unnatural feeling of comfort.
Then it attacks.
What Is a Chillborn?
Chillborn are elementals that hunt in tundra, frozen forests, ice packs, and other brutally cold environments. They are especially active during heavy snowstorms and blizzards, when poor visibility makes it easier for them to stalk unsuspecting travelers.
Despite their small size, Chillborn possess surprising strength and speed. Their gnarled limbs are covered with long, razor-sharp icicles, while their hollow eyes glow with an eerie blue light.
More disturbing, however, is the strange sensation that accompanies them.
Travelers approaching a Chillborn may suddenly feel warm, comfortable, and completely safe. In the middle of a deadly snowstorm, that feeling can be incredibly tempting. Unfortunately, it is an illusion created by the creature itself.
The Chillborn uses that false sense of security to leave victims helpless before closing in for the kill.
Chillborn
A small humanoid creature with a hunched back approaches; long, razor-sharp icicles hang from its gnarled limbs. Its hollow eyes glow with an eerie blue light as it regards you.
Arctic Predators. Chillborn are elementals known for their superhuman speed and strength; their very bite induces immediate frostbite. Tales of encounters with chillborn usually begin with the recounting of a heavy snowstorm or blizzard, as these creatures are particularly known for hunting during such weather. They are adept at blending in with artic terrain—tundra, icy forests, or ice packs—and often lie in wait for unwary travelers. The first sign of their presence is often the feeling of warmth and safety the chillborn are known to emit; however, being warm and safe couldn’t be farther from the truth for such travelers.

Ice Walker. The chillborn ignores movement restriction caused by walking on ice or other slippery surfaces.
Actions
Icy Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6 + 2) piercing damage plus 2 (1d4) cold damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 10 Constitution saving throw or become frostbitten until the end of its next turn. While frostbitten, the target’s movement speed is reduced by 10 feet.
Hallucinatory Presence (1/day). The chillborn can emit an aura of warmth and safety within a 15-foot radius. Creatures within the area must make a DC 11 Wisdom saving throw or be charmed by the chillborn for 1 minute. Charmed creatures are incapacitated and have a speed of 0. The effect ends if the creature takes damage or if it is more than 30 feet away from the chillborn.
How to Use the Chillborn
The most interesting thing about the Chillborn is that it works best before initiative is even rolled.
Instead of simply placing one in the middle of a snowy battlefield, let the players experience its presence first. Describe the worsening storm. Mention the biting wind and the cold creeping through their clothing. Then, as they continue forward, describe an unexpected feeling of warmth.
That warmth should feel welcome.
Maybe one character thinks they have found a sheltered area. Maybe another assumes some kind of magical heat source is nearby. Either way, the Chillborn has already begun manipulating the encounter.
Once the creature reveals itself, its Hallucinatory Presence can incapacitate nearby characters and leave them vulnerable. That gives the Chillborn an opportunity to attack while the rest of the party realizes that the comforting sensation was actually a trap.
This works particularly well when several Chillborn are hunting together.
One might remain hidden while another draws attention. A second could approach from behind, while others use the storm and terrain to remain difficult to spot. Because their movement is unaffected by slippery ice, they can also move freely across terrain that slows or inconveniences the characters.
The result can be a surprisingly tense encounter for such a low-challenge monster.

Make the Environment Part of the Encounter
The Chillborn becomes much more interesting when the terrain matters.
Place the encounter on a frozen lake, narrow mountain trail, glacier, or windswept ice shelf. Let blowing snow reduce visibility. Add patches of slippery ice, deep snow, or dangerous drops.
The Chillborn can move through these environments without worrying about slippery surfaces, which gives it a natural advantage over the characters.
You might have one creature attack and then retreat across dangerous ice, tempting the party to chase it. Another could hide among snowdrifts while the players struggle to determine where the next attack will come from.
The environment should make the Chillborn feel like a creature that belongs there rather than a monster that happened to be dropped onto a snowy battle map.
Use the False Warmth as Foreshadowing
Hallucinatory Presence also gives you a great storytelling tool.
Before the players ever see a Chillborn, you can establish that something is wrong by describing strange warmth in places where there should be none.
Perhaps the party finds a frozen corpse with an oddly peaceful expression. A journal nearby might mention how wonderful it felt to finally be warm despite the raging storm.
Later, the characters experience that same sensation themselves.
Now they know something is wrong.
This kind of foreshadowing makes the encounter more memorable because the players are not simply reacting to a stat block. They are uncovering the behavior of an unfamiliar predator.
Chillborn Encounter Ideas
The Chillborn is easy to drop into almost any cold-weather adventure.
A caravan traveling through a mountain pass might disappear during a blizzard, leaving the party to search for survivors. The characters eventually discover several travelers sitting peacefully in the snow, completely unaware that Chillborn are stalking them nearby.
A remote village might report that hunters keep vanishing during storms. The only clue is that survivors describe feeling strangely warm shortly before their companions disappeared.
You could also place Chillborn inside a frozen dungeon, abandoned fortress, or glacier cavern. Their ability to move freely over ice makes them effective ambush predators in chambers filled with slippery terrain.
For a more dangerous encounter, combine them with a larger arctic monster. The Chillborn incapacitate or slow characters while the larger predator closes in.
Where the Chillborn Really Shines
The Chillborn works especially well in:
- arctic wilderness adventures
- blizzards and heavy snowstorms
- frozen dungeons and glacier caves
- low-level survival encounters
- ambushes involving difficult terrain
- horror scenes built around isolation and false security
Its challenge rating is low, but that does not mean the creature has to feel insignificant. The Hallucinatory Presence ability gives it a strong identity, while its movement speed and icy bite make it dangerous enough to matter once combat begins.
More importantly, it gives the dungeon master something many low-level monsters lack: a built-in encounter concept.
You do not need to invent a complicated gimmick. The monster already tells you how it hunts. The storm comes in. The travelers become lost. Then, suddenly, everything feels warm.
And that is when the Chillborn strikes.
