From the darkness, they rise. Their hunger for life is no longer to fill an insatiable need but to strengthen them. They have grown to understand their undead state enough to learn how to evolve themselves: First, feed on the vitality of their “parent”; second, consume until the world darkens in their presence.

Hatred of Light. The light is blinding to these creatures. Thus, their resentment toward any who produce it is just as blinding. Fire or Holy light makes no difference; gloom shadows will hone in on those who produce light to extinguish it as quickly as possible.

Spread Darkness. Darkness is their world. Along with extinguishing light sources, gloom shadows also tend to drown their victims in darkness before killing them.

Undead Nature. A gloom shadow doesn’t require air, food, drink, or sleep.

Amorphous. The gloom shadow can move through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide without squeezing. It can share its space with another creature.

Being of Darkness. Any Small nonmagical light source within 10 feet of the gloom shadow is automatically extinguished.

Shadow Stealth. While in dim light or darkness, the gloom shadow can take the Hide action as a bonus action.

Sunlight Weakness. While in sunlight, the gloom shadow has disadvantage on attack rolls, ability checks, and saving throws.

Actions

Encapsulate. Melee Weapon Attack: The gloom shadow moves into the space of one Medium or smaller creature, enshrouding it in darkness. The target is blinded while enveloped. The creature must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution saving throw or take 20 (5d6 + 3) necrotic damage and have its Strength score reduced by 1d4.

If the gloom shadow was hidden before making this attack, the target makes the saving throw with disadvantage. On a successful save, the target takes half damage and its Strength score isn’t reduced. The target dies if this reduces its Strength to 0. Otherwise, the reduction lasts until the target finishes a short or long rest.

If a humanoid dies from this attack, the gloom shadow regains hit points equal to the damage dealt with the killing blow.

Aura of Gloom (aura, darkness, divine) 10 feet. A non-magical light source that is Small or smaller is extinguished when it enters the aura.

Light Vulnerability Attacks against the gloom shadow are treated as magical if made by a creature in magical light or with an object in magical light (such as from the light spell).

Melee [one-action] shadow hand +16 (finesse, magical), Damage 2d6+3 void

Engulf [two-actions] (attack) DC 24, 5d6 void plus Absorb Shadow, Rupture 11. The creature is blinded but can breathe normally while engulfed.

Slink in Shadows The gloom shadow can Hide or end its Sneak in a creature’s or object’s shadow.

Absorb Shadow [one-action] (divine) Requirements The gloom shadow damaged a living creature with a shadow hand Strike or Engulf on its previous action.
Effect The gloom shadow pulls at the target’s shadow, making the creature enfeebled 1, or enfeebled 2 if it critically failed the most recent save against Engulf. This condition stacks with other enfeebled conditions from shadows, to a maximum of enfeebled 4. If the target’s enfeebled value was already 4, it dies. If the creature died on the gloom shadow’s previous action or from this ability, the gloom shadow regains 10 Hit Points. The enfeebled value from Absorb Shadow decreases by 1 every hour.
