Dragonfall Centennial | Free Event for D&D and PF2e

By Trevar "Dramatic Dragons" Fracchiolla

Every hundred years, the town of Kirthweth throws a grand celebration known as the Dragonfall Centennial—a festive tribute to a terrifying past. What began as a desperate ritual to appease a deadly dragon has evolved into a jubilant affair filled with contests, costumes, and a lottery for donated treasures. Locals and visitors alike join in the revelry, electing the town’s most beautiful citizens to play the role of dragon tributes and feasting into the night. But as this third centennial begins, whispers stir among the nobility: could mocking an ancient wyrm invite real danger back to Kirthweth’s doorstep?

Dragonfall Centennial

Event Overview. The Dragonfall Centennial only occurs once every 100 years in the town of Kirthweth but has only been celebrated twice before. Four hundred years ago, a deadly dragon terrorized the town. It burned nearly half of the village down and claimed dozens of lives. Desperate to save themselves, the town tried to placate the dragon using any means at their disposal: offering it a beautiful maiden, amassing a pile of treasure, and even worshipping the beast. Their efforts amused the dragon, who accepted their tribute and warned it would return in 100 years to receive additional repayment.

As the years ticked by, Kirthweth’s dread grew. On the appointed day, the townsfolk gathered their treasures and corralled their sacrifices, ready to pay obeisance to the dragon when it appeared—yet it never did. Unbeknownst to the town, the dragon had been slain by an adventurer several decades past. Overjoyed that they were spared, all of Kirthweth celebrated, distributing the treasure amongst themselves and feasting throughout the night.

Today marks the third centennial event, known now as Dragonfall, and all concerns over dragons have passed. However, the centennial event still maintains several themes from its original conception, including:

  • The townsfolk vote for the most beautiful woman and most handsome man in the town and name them as tributes;
  • One resident of the town puts on a dragon costume and pretends to terrorize the celebrants with outrageous demands;
  • The town elders host an evening banquet with the finest fare and drink that Kirthweth has to offer;
  • The people amass a collection of treasures and wealth at the center of town, and those who donate to it join the lottery to pick whatever they want from the hoard.

People Involved. All who are present in Kirthweth at the time of the centennial, be they residents or visitors, are encouraged to enjoy the festivities. Several nobles in nearby estates received invitations to attend the previous anniversary, and the town elders have sent invitations once again. This year, business owners have mutually agreed to offer deep discounts on all products and run their shops for only half the day, after which they will go out into the streets to celebrate the occasion.

Location. The common areas of Kirthweth are the prime focus during the celebration. With businesses locked and shuttered after midday, any further sales occur with the street vendors selling refreshments and souvenirs. The spacious green space at the center of town remains a focal point throughout the day, either as the staging ground for the treasure exchange or a space to enjoy the end-of-day feast.

Roleplaying Notes.

  • Visitors and residents are all invited to submit themselves in the most beautiful or handsome person contest. The contest is primarily a popularity contest, but the nominal 5 cp entry fee funds additional raffles and contests at the event. The voting for both categories begins around mid-morning.
  • The winners named in the most beautiful/handsome person contest are treated like royalty throughout the centennial event, and they receive free gifts from various vendor stalls as well as priority in the treasure hoard lottery. At the evening banquet, they are served first and given the best food and drink.
  • A resident wearing a ridiculous dragon costume often parades around the town. The village elders select someone from amongst a pool of applicants to fulfill this role. The chosen resident then gets to demand forfeits from the townsfolk, either in the form of treasure, food, or drink.
  • Some children carry wooden weaponry into the event to attack the “dragon” when it comes near them. If they successfully hit their target, the “dragon” must surrender a copper to the child as a reward.
  • The village elders manage the treasure hoard lottery, which is open to anyone to participate. To do so, someone only needs to donate something to the pile—usually something flashy but worth at least 10 sp. The participants’ names then go into an urn, and at midday, the village elders pull names at random to determine who gets to collect something from the hoard first. This portion of the festivities is usually more contentious than the rest, so additional guards come to maintain order.

Draconic Ire. While the initial threat of the dragon passed several centuries ago and has been replaced by good-natured fun, the nobility in the area is rightfully concerned that the festivities may lead to greater complications. As rumors spread of the centennial event, these aristocrats worry that dragons will learn of it and be incensed at the mockery made of one of their kind. This does not prevent the nobles from attending for fun, but many do so in disguise to protect their identities against reprisals.
