Feast and the Fey | Free D&D 5e Encounter
Not every dangerous D&D encounter needs to begin with monsters charging out of the woods. Sometimes the trap looks like a picnic.
Feast and the Fey is a free encounter for four to six 1st-level characters that begins with what appears to be a perfect woodland break: a sunny clearing, friendly pixies, a quickling serving food and wine, and plenty of travelers sleeping peacefully in the grass. Of course, something is wrong. The food and drink are drugged, the sleeping guests are victims, and the fey are more interested in collecting trophies than offering hospitality.
The encounter gives players plenty of ways to respond, whether they accept the invitation, grow suspicious, investigate the clearing, resist the sleeping agent, or track the thieves down afterward to get their valuables back.
Feast and the Fey comes from Loot & Lore, which is packed with ready-to-use encounters, traps, puzzles, magic items, NPCs, and other resources you can drop directly into your D&D 5e game.
Feast and the Fey
Level. This encounter is designed for four to six level-one characters.
Creatures. This encounter features the following creatures: pixie, quickling.
Location. While wandering through the forest, a meadow opens to a small picnic area with all sorts of wildlife meandering about and the bright, crisp scent of flowers wafting through the air.
Description. About the grove, deer run around, birds chirp, and the sun shines regardless of what the weather was outside the clearing. A quickling zips around, refilling bowls of food and glasses of wine for several guests who are feasting. Many other guests are sleeping contentedly on the grassy ground. As the adventures either enter the grove or approach it, they are met by two pixies who offer them a place of rest and sustenance.
The food and drink are quite refreshing. Despite the pixies’ seeming hospitality, the food and drink are laced with a potent sleeping agent. After one hour of consuming any food or drink, a character must make a DC 13 Constitution saving throw, falling asleep on a failed save. The pixies and quickling then remove all one valuable each from the unconscious adventurers and magically relocate their grove. The slumbering characters awake after several hours to find some of their items missing and the fey and their clearing gone.

Loot. If the characters track the fey creatures down and confront them over the theft, the pixies will return their belongings plus a silver belt buckle worth 10 gp, a small pouch of gems worth 25 gp total, and a potion of healing. If attacked, the fey will defend themselves, though they will look to escape as quickly as possible.
Secret. The pixies and quicklings are only interested in the valuables as a trophy of their conquest over weak-willed humanoids. The fey have a large tree where they keep all of the trophies they’ve collected over the years, which amount to a tidy treasure hoard, the contents of which are determined by the game master.
