Anajdin Flower Festival
Event Overview. When civilization meets nature, one entity must yield to the other. This inescapable truth has plagued society for generations, and it is no less the case for Anajdin, a forest town and the primary provider of timber and logs sourced from the nearby woods. However, many in town seek to establish a symbiotic co-existence with the natural world. A druidic society known as the Order of the Open Petals developed the Anajdin Flower Festival to ease the challenges of integrating daily life with the surrounding forest.
The Anajdin Flower Festival occurs on the solstices and equinoxes each year, as these days are particularly important to the Order of the Open Petals. The activities depend on the season, following the general themes that the natural world demonstrates:
-
In spring, the festival focuses on a rejuvenation theme, and practitioners gather to plant trees and flowers on a plot of land owned by the Order of the Open Petals. This event highlights the integral connection between civilization and nature.
- During the summer solstice’s creativity-themed events, a midday parade featuring brightly colored flowers marches throughout the town. Participants arrange the flowers into elaborate costumes and create displays for the town to admire as the event unfolds.
- Autumn is a more solemn proceeding for the Order, focusing on preparation and the upcoming season. In honor of the previous seasons, the druids clear most of their fields of plants and dying trees to make room for new growth.
- Upon the winter solstice, all of Anajdin gains access to enjoy a woodworking competition designed to honor the perseverance of the town elders ahead of the cold months ahead.
People Involved. The equinox spring and autumn events are for members of the Order of the Open Petals and like-minded individuals with an affinity for nature. They view outsiders with distrust at these events unless they demonstrate their dedication to maintaining balance with nature. Due to increased local tensions, the Order’s more militant members enforce this restriction more strictly than would appear reasonable for the type of events they hold.
However, the summer and winter solstice celebrations are open to the public to raise more awareness and attention to the importance of balancing life with nature. Even those who disapprove of the Flower Festival can find little to complain about in these events. Challenges still exist to maintain harmony between the local factions, but conflicts are much less common during these events.
Location. Anyone following the Order of the Open Petals bedecks their homes’ interior and exterior with wildflowers during any solstice and equinox events, displaying their support for the natural world. However, most of Anajdin’s residents do not belong to or support the Order, so public showcases of this support stand out from the rest. In addition to displays around the home, the Anajdin Flower Festival also takes place at the Order of the Open Petals’ center of operations, on a large plot of land outside the town walls.
Event Details
Roleplaying Notes.
· Due to opposition from merchants and traders in Anajdin, the Order of the Open Petals guards the newly planted land before and after the spring equinox to ensure the factions opposed to the festival cannot destroy the revitalized land.
· Spring’s attention to rejuvenation leads the festival to a stretch of land owned by the Order of the Open Petals. Members of the organization spend the day working the land, planting new trees and flowering plants in the space. The work is designed to supplement the natural world’s recovery from the harsh winter months.
· Whether participating in the summertime flower parade or not, most of Anajdin is abuzz with excitement to watch the spectacle. Participants have been known to create impressive costumes and displays atop horse-drawn wagons that demonstrate unique designs and appearances.
· During the autumn equinox, the Order invites their followers to assist with cleansing the land by gathering leaves, needles, and dead or dying growth to make room for the next spring’s events. This project is performed in groups of five, usually as family units.
· The autumn cleanse includes a contest to see who can collect the most debris into a pile. The groups that amass the tallest and widest piles each receive a pouch containing 10 sp to incentivize all participants to do their best.
· At sunset during the autumnal equinox, they set each of the piles ablaze. All who gather watch the piles burn away in a silent vigil, reflecting on the hardships to come during the winter months.
· Although winter is a challenging time for Anajdin, the townsfolk all look forward to the wood-carving competition. There is considerable respect for elders in the town, and an event that recognizes their contribution to the settlement and life is welcome.
· Additional woodworking events take place during the winter solstice event, including classes for whittling and other carving activities. The public is encouraged to participate and welcome to learn for a nominal fee during these days. They can sell anything they make during the event at the woodworkers’ expo later that day.
Capitalistic Opposition. Businesses and other organizations within Anajdin vehemently oppose the Flower Festival because it impedes their ability to fully utilize the surrounding forest to enrich the town through trade. Tensions continue to escalate every season because of the ideological clash between those who enjoy the festival and those who oppose the practice. Many of these factions attempt to hinder others during events to discourage participation, toeing the line of what is legal when protesting and counter-protesting the festivities.
