Undeparted | Free 5e and PF2e Shop
Written by Dean Rigdon
After adventuring, trekking through the wilderness, and finally finding civilization again, characters want places to spend that gold! This shop offers a great variety of options in resurrection services, getting characters back into the mix of adventuring right after they finish spending their precious gold.
Versions for both 5e and Pathfinder 2e are included.
If you're looking for more drag-and-drops like this or other 5e and PF2e resources, check out our entire collection of Lair Magazine issues. This particular encounter came from the September 2023 issue, Deserts & Desserts, where you can find even more game master resources!
Undeparted - 5e
Small healing shop
This shop offers easy access to resurrection services. As all means of raising a person from the dead are at minimum uncommon, carefully consider the consequences before implementing this shop into your game. If desired, you can change it to more mundane types of healing or make Zalzu a charlatan who steals money after making it appear he’s completed a resurrection.
“I saw the light, so beautiful . . . And then there was something standing above me, splashing cold water in my face!” —Recently revived customer
This shop is a humble building with a classic wooden sign out front proclaiming “Undeparted.” A quaint cobblestone path runs to the front door, and bushes with pink flowers lie under the windows. The flowers lend a sweet fragrance to the air and brighten up the front of the building.
Description. The front of the shop is all wood painted a cool shade of blue, and decals on the two windows advertise symbols of healing and medicine. The cobbled path to the door is surrounded by a small grassy yard dotted with flowers. Under the windows sit fragrant bushes with pink flowers.
The building contains just one room with a wooden table in the center, a desk and chair off to the side, and a shelf filled with scrolls. On the table, dried blood and other unnamed stains threaten to overpower the scent of the flowers outside. The shelves contain spell scrolls to bring back the dead or heal the sick, obviously transcribed at the desk.
Interesting Discoveries. While everyone would love to be revived upon their untimely demise, not everyone can afford that nicety. The Undeparted refuses to un-depart a client until they have paid in full and upfront. Spell scrolls cost money!
Upon dying, some clients’ family members decide to withdraw and that the medical money is better spent elsewhere. These sad clients are stored behind the shop in a mass grave. Each one is labeled with a nametag to identify them should someone eventually pay for them to be brought back. But, until the money is in, the clients are out.
Undeparted NPCs
Zalzu and Kiggle are intertwined in a delightfully convoluted manner and make business personal.
Zalzu
Nonbinary halfling (priest), true neutral
Description. Zalzu can cast revivify as well as the other spells. They are a formidable force if threatened, and even more protective of their money. Zalzu is generally cheery and unafraid of blood or poking around bad injuries, a good trait for a healer.
Occupation. Zalzu does heal but deals mostly with bringing back the dead. Zalzu essentially offers life insurance but in a different way than the usual monetary benefits. Zalzu is perceived in part as a scammer and in part as an essential asset to the area.
Secret. Money is Zalzu’s main motive, and sometimes Zalzu has taken money from certain nobles in exchange for not offering their services to someone the paying noble wants to stay dead. This is legal and within Zalzu’s rights, but it would be majorly frowned upon and would lose them much business.
Kiggle Halfnape
Female human (noble), lawful neutral
Description. Kiggle is a haughty noble and a three-time user of Undeparted’s services. Kiggle has many enemies who would like her dead or perhaps in the graves behind Undeparted’s cheery main entrance. She laughs in the face of this and every other danger in her way, the reason for her tight partnership with Zalzu.
Occupation. Kiggle is a politician by birth and training. She is ruthless in her tactics and only involves herself for personal gain. Zalzu and her have come to an understanding where she provides the path to high-paying customers, and Zalzu provides Kiggle with unlimited redoes.
Secret. Kiggle came to power when she paid Zalzu to keep her recently assassinated father in the grave. No one would be surprised by this news, and many suspect it, but any proof would certainly discredit her and give her many enemies the edge they need.
