Dene'tok | Free 5e and PF2e Monster
Written by Hana the Lorekeeper
Torchlight illuminates this creature’s form, leaving an instant desire for the shadows to return. Although dog-like in form, scales and spines cover its hide in place of fur, and large, bulbous black eyes peer out with intelligence. Blood drips down its chin, its grin a horrifying parody of a person’s smirk.
Bloodsucking Monstrosities. Bred by a group of long-dead people, these small creatures look like a cross between a lizard and a dog. Standing on four legs with scales covering its entire body, it has short, sharp spines along its back and black, bug-like eyes that can track motion through the dark. Although it can consume any food in solid or liquid form, its preferred meal is the blood of small animals and humanoids, particularly goats. Because of this preference, they go to the surface world to hunt wild and domestic goats under the cover of night, sparking rumors of vampires in an area.
Name Origins. Although they have many names through the underground, the name “dene’tok” is based on an old dialect of drow Undercommon and translates roughly to “goat drinker.” This word differs from the Undercommon word for vampire (which directly translates to “blood drinker”).

Drain Blood. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target that is prone. Hit: 8 (2d8 + 3) necrotic damage. The target’s hit point maximum is reduced by an amount equal to half to the total damage, and the dene’tok regains hit points equal to that amount. The reduction lasts until the target finishes a long rest. The target dies if this effect reduces its hit point maximum to 0.
